Stephen was born in Ireland in 1829, and died on November 14, 1875, in North Branch, Jackson County. He was survived by his wife Ellen Banks, whom is also from Ireland. They were married on November 29, 1856 in New Brunswick, NJ and had 5 children: John, Michael, Thomas, Stephen and George.

He voluntered into the calvary and entered into Company I. Then in June of 1865, he was transfered to Company A, until his discharge in Brownsville, TX on May 28, 1866.

On about November 29, 1864, while riding his horse between Fort Hudson and Liberty, in the state of LA he was severly injured. The horse he was riding, fell on him injuring him on his right side. At times he was thought he would not make it home to Jackson County alive.

Stephen had blue eyes, dark brown hair and light Composition. He was 5 feet and 9 1/2 inches tall and his occupation was a farmer from Hixton, WI.
